Back to School and Fall Inspiration!

Monday was my Hubby's first day of school... in a long time. Kurt is a journeyman Welder, but has now begun his second trade; as an Electrician. Back to Apprentice wages, but loving every minute! And so... for the next few years he will be in and out of school for 10 weeks at a time. Fun! :) Isn't he a cutie?

I thought I would share a few more of the layouts I did for my friend Willow's wedding. Hopefully they will inspire you for this weeks challenge at Lasting Memories... "Chipboard & Fall Colours." Hurry and post your layouts for a chance to be top 3! Entries will only be accepted until this Saturday!!

I love adding "memorabilia" to my pages... above you can see the wedding invitation... I did all of the layouts for this wedding to match their chosen colours.
I used "My World" Cricut Cartridge to make the wheat...love it!
The third layout I did for this wedding is a little more "full" as I wanted to fit the rest of my pictures in... I used the program from the reception (again, the same colours!) along with my favourite pictures from the dinner and dance.
You had a gorgeous wedding Willow (& Matt!), thanks for including me in the fun!!!

I hope this has helped to inspire you for the "Fall Colours" challenge over at Lasting Memories... now get over there and link your layouts!!!!

Challenge #8: Chipboard & Fall Colours

I LOVE FALL COLOURS! Reds, orange, yellow, brown... all such beautiful, earthy tones!
Last year my good friend got married in October...and her colours were so gorgeous! I couldn't resist using them for this week's Lasting Memories challenge... "Chipboard & Fall Colours."

Willow's GORGEOUS wedding photos!
I printed the text off of the computer in a dark brown shade to matcht the rest of the paper. The leaves are all punched out cardstock, and were actually decorations that were sprinkled all over the tables at the reception. I love to re-use pieces of memorabilia from events... I think it makes the page that much more personal and special.
I used a black photo-safe pen to "fake-stitch" are the patch work assembly of pictures on the right page, and around the single photo on the left page. I also added a little bit of dimension (hard to see in these photos) by "pop-dotting" the words to raise them away from the page.

I think this is one of my favourite layouts that I have ever done! Thanks Willow!!
What can YOU do with fall colours?? Don't forget to link your layouts at the Lasting Memories challenge this week: "Chipboard & Fall Colours."

Our Weekend Report:

Oh Happy Day!
The forecast was calling for snow... but the sun has won again! It is currently +3!! Yay!
It's not that I don't like winter... I love winter! It's just that I am missing summer. Oh well.

Our Weekend Report:
We spent a lovely weekend out at my in-law's farm, cleaning, organizing, constructing and hunting! Well... Kurt was hunting and we were doing everything else! Nineteen GEESE in the freezer already... it's gonna be a good winter!!! We are having Christmas out at the farm this year with our whole family, and a bunch of relatives! There will be between 24-29 people there for Christmas day!!! Hence the early getting ready.
My Father-in-law and I are a great carpentry team... we built a step in front of the fireplace on Saturday night. What fun, and it looks fantastic!! I can't wait to sit by the fire and open my stocking! We are going to tile-mosaic the base and around the fireplace opening... I can't wait! I'll be sure to post pictures when it is done. Does anyone know where I can find cheap tiles???
Yesterday we put on and attended a 94th birthday party for our community Grandmother. What a blast! She is the most spunky old girl I know... and everyone had a great time.
Well....there's our weekend in a nutshell.
In other news... I will be placing a Creative Memories order this Wednesday, so if anyone needs supplies in the next few days, let me know! Or check out my website to order supplies and have them delivered directly to your home address!

Challenge #7: Circles, Squares & Scallops

Here we are on Layout Challenge #7 from the Lasting Memories Layout Challenge blog...
Now that summer is officially over (well, I guess it is still not "officially" fall until Tuesday), I have been feeling a little melancholy and decided to do some summer scraps.

This was a super fun page to make...I love circles and squares!!

I cut out pictures with my Circle Trimmers from Creative Memories, and then proceeded to cut around the cut out... either in a circle or a square. I then placed the pictures BACK in their 'frame' and twisted them a lttle... what a cool effect!!

I also love my 'square punch' from Creative Memories and used it for alot of the outline/diamond/square embellishments. Weaving the outline of the squares together really made for a neat look. Then of course I had to use my fabulous Creative Memories bike-track stickers! Perfect!

I really love how this layout turned out... and what a great time we had making these memories!

Head on over to Lasting Memories Layout Challenge to see what the other Design Team members came up with and to enter your "Circles, Squares and Scallops" layouts.

Happy Engagement card

It is Autumn.
The other morning as I drove Kurtis to work, the fog was so thick we could barely see the lines on the road. The fog lasted all morning, and the temperature stayed at zero until ten o'clock in the morning.
This morning we had the first real THICK frost. I have been wearing socks. I hate socks. My husband is the last person in the world to feel cold; yesterday he turned up the heat in our house. The forecast is calling for snow soon.
Autumn is almost over.

In more exciting news, my Hubby's best friend recently got engaged! I made this card for them:

Duck Hunting & "Out of the Box" challenge pictures!

I have beaten the system. For now at least.
Although there are still some annoying buggs to work out... grrr. At least I can upload pictures.
Last night we went out duck hunting. 11 ducks in the freezer.
Here is my layout from Sunday's new challenge at Lasting Memories:
(You can read the beginning of this post in the last post).

First: I found a sketch that I liked, and found pictures that fit what it called for.
Second: I picked out paper (I love the 'Rusty Pickle' Camo!)
Third: I stuck it all together and embelished!!
This was a fun project! Hope you enjoyed it... check out what the other Design Team members have come up with and be sure to LINK YOUR LAYOUTS over at Lasting Memories!!
And remember... our challenges are now WEEKLY!!
Happy scrappin!!

Challenge #6: Out of the Box! Try Something Completely NEW!

Well, this week's challenge was to step out of our creative boxes, and try somehting completely NEW. This whole Design Team experience has been new to me and already I have done several things I never thought of doing in my scrapbooks...and there are lots more "out of the box" for me challenges coming up!

This may seem odd to many of you...but I have never used a sketch to make a layout (or card or anything). Ever. I just haven't. I hate feeling closed in and like I have to follow a pattern. I know you can deviate, and that a sketch is only supposed to give you ideas... but my mind doesn't work that way! It's all or nothing baby!
So,... for this week's "Out of the Box" challenge I used a sketch!!
I finally found a sketch I liked at Scrapbook Challenges and printed it off. I decided to stick with something simple for my first sketch, and I actually LOVE how it turned out! Here goes...

Well... my blog is full. I am not sure how this happened as I have not even had it up and running for a year yet...but apparently I can no longer upload pictures. As Kurt is going back to school in a couple weeks and we will be down to one income, I don't have the extra cash to buy "space"  to hold pictures...so for the time being, or until I figure out what is really the matter... I will only be posting words... this will be a challenge... but I think it will be kind of fun! We'll see.

So... to check out my layout for this week, head on over to LASTING MEMORIES LAYOUT CHALLENGE!!!!

Jam Making

Well...it is officially fall. And, it has been officially CRAZY around our place for weeks! Despite the merry-go-round of life, I have somehow found time for a little berry picking and jam making! Incredible! Several weeks ago, when we first got home from holidays, we would go out berry picking in the evenings until we could no longer see the berries! I am lucky enough to have a husband who loves berry picking... because he loves the finished product! We got about 7-8 gallons of raspberries and 5-6 gallons of saskatoons.

We had bought two cases of peaches on our way home from holidays, and Hubby's grandpa brought a few more cases up for us as well. This year we did something different...after berry picking, we promptly started two batches of wine... Peach Raspberry and Raspberry Saskatoon. We won't have as much jam, but I can't wait to taste test the wine!!

I have had a few requests from people who want to learn how to 'can.' It doesn't look like I will be able to get together with anyone this year... but I thought I would do the next best thing... pictures and a tutorial!
Here goes...
For those of you who don't know me... I am rarely without a hot drink in my hand. And no kitchen project is complete without a pretty apron and a steaming cup of tea or coffee. First things first: boil your water and make tea.
Kurt's favourite kind of jam is "Peach Saskatoon" which I accidently made the first year we were married because I didn't have enough of either to justify a whole batch of jam. I have been making it every year now.
You will need to go out and find a Saskatoon bush and spend a couple hours picking berries. You can make a small batch of jam with only 4-8 cups of berries... but I prefer to make lots at once.
Aquire some peaches... either from a tree if you live in the South... or a store or fruit stand if you are a little more Northern.
Now, before you get carried away in the joy of jam making... be sure that you have enough jars and lids sterilized and ready to go. I don't have a dishwasher, so I wash my jars in really hot water and soap, rinse them, and then let them sit in boiling water (or really hot tap water) until I am ready to use them.
PREPARE YOUR FRUIT.
Sift through the berries and remove all of the bugs, sticks, leaves and other junk. Rinse the berries in cool water. Peaches can be prepared several ways... you can use a knife to peal them (tedious and wasteful) or you can use boiling water to 'slip' the skin off in one piece. Boil a pot of water. Place the peaches in the water so that they are covered. Let simmer for 1-2 minutes. Remove the peaches and 'slip' the skin off (don't burn yourself...they are very hot!)
Once skinned, you can easily pit and chop the peaches up into small pieces.
I always make my jam a little different, so this year I did half Saskatoon and half peach. I got a little carried away and used about 10 cups of each (and then had to split it into two pots!).
Now for the fun part...
Pour your Saskatoons into the pot and then proceed to mash/crush them up. For a more smooth jam you can blend/pure your fruit. We like our jam chunky, so I just mash them up.
Pour in your peaches and mash the two fruits together (again, you can pre-blend them if you prefer).
Turn on your stove to medium-high and start cooking your fruit! Depending on how many cups of fruit you used, use the same number of cups of white sugar. (ie: 10 cups fruit, 10 cups sugar). Sometimes you can get away with less sugar than this (I usually do a little less), but your jam will be slightly more runny.
Add Certo (pectin) as instructed on the box (usually one package to every 4 cups of fruit, depending on the fruit).
Bring jam to a boil and let slowly bubble, continually stirring. (DO NOT spill in your burner... especially down the vent hole for your oven. It takes a VERY long time to clean out the vent and inside of your oven...not that I would know...)
In the mean time, prepare your jars. You will need two sauce pans... one to boil the jars, and one to boil the lids.
As the jam boils, it will begin to form a layer of "foam" on top. Scoop this off until it no longer forms. You are now ready to pour your jam into your sterilized jars!
Use a funnel and pouring device to fill your jars. Leave half to a quarter inch head space in your jars and seal by placing the hot lids and rings on your jars. Be careful! Everything is very hot (or should be!) so use an oven mit or tea towel.
Because the jam, jars and lids are all very hot, they will seal themselves. Leave sitting on the counter for about 24 hours. Press all of the lids to make sure they are sealed, and then store for the winter!
And there you have it... simple, delicious homemade jam! Hope this is helpful... let me know how your jam turns out!
